API gravity moves inversely to density, which means the denser an oil is, the lower its API gravity will be. An API of 10 is equivalent to water, which means any oil with an API above 10 will float on water while any with an API below 10 will sink. The API gravity is used to classify oils as light, medium, heavy, or extra heavy. Crude's classification as either “light” or “heavy” depends on the oil’s relative density, based on the American Petroleum Institute (API) Gravity. This measurement reflects how light or heavy a crude oil is compared to water. If an oil’s API Gravity is greater than 10, it is lighter than water and will float on it. API RP 500 shows typical examples of classifications of equipment in oil and gas production facilities, including the extent of the classified areas around such equipment. Figs. 1 through 5 provide examples of classified locations in a typical oil-and-gas-production facility. Recommended Practice for Classification of Locations for Electrical Installations at Petroleum Facilities Classified as Class I, Division 1 and Division 2. API RECOMMENDED PRACTICE 500. The SAE rating of an oil is a measure of its viscosity (eg 20W50). API is the American Petroleum Institute. The API rating of an engine oil covers the performance

API Service SN the current rating means “S” for Service Station oil (for gasoline engines) and N the current level of service. Or it will say “API Service CJ-4.” API  The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) developed a grading system over 100 years ago to classify the thickness of an oil by viscosity. It has been refined  Today oils are classified via a system developed jointly by the American Petroleum Institute (API), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and  For diesel engines, the current top oil rating is CI-4. In the API's words, SM oils are "designed to provide improved oxidation resistance, improved deposit protection
